Doggy Days are here again!
12-Oct-05
Sunday October 16, 2005 will be Doggy Days, a fund raising, fun filled event to raise money for Cape Ann Animal Aid. I'll have another Art4Animals table there, and will also have my daughter Julie's project Crafts4Animals with me. There'll be agility training, a Parade of Paws, neat gifts, food and fun...not to mention Dogs!! This all happens from 11 - 3 at the tennis courts at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester Ma.
Right up the hill will be the Sato reunion, where lucky owners of adopted Puerto Rican street dogs - Satos - get to meet the folks who rescued their dogs in Puerto Rico. It's also a great chance to learn about your pet's history, meet dog relatives, and see a bunch of wonderful dogs and people!
If you aren't able to attend Doggy Days, and are interested in supporting CAAA through a donation for art, contact me at shim1990@hotmail.com. Here are just a couple of examples of my work...there are plenty more in the Photo Album! We're looking forward to Doggy Days. It should be a doggone good time!

Welcome, Pippin!
05-Jul-05
July 4, 2005 started with a bang! We welcomed the newest member of the Haypile Honeys into our home.
Pippin came from a very crowded, very overwhelmed house in Wakefield, MA. I went to the owner's house to get two guinea pigs for a young friend, and was won over by Pippin's winning smile! Check out her pigtures and see if you agree! There are still 11 pigs desperately needing good homes in Wakefield. E mail me for details.

The Fabulous Porky Porcellous
25-Apr-05
Five years ago, I had to leave my job as an artist at a local studio, and I began working as an Instructional Aide in a kindergarten class. My new career path brought me many new challenges and experiences, but none so life altering as meeting Britney, the classroom guinea pig!
I had never known a guinea pig before. I had many rabbits as a child, and had friends who were lucky enough to have hamsters and gerbils. But somehow, an animal lover like myself had never stepped into the Wonderful World of Guinea Pigs. Britney changed all that!
It was love at first wheek! Soon I was bringing treats in for Britney every morning, and I was delighted by her squeals and whistles. I began reading about guinea pigs and was amazed at how bright and charming they were.
Britney soon became a fixture at our house on weekends. Even my husband, who declared upon Britney's first visit..."Get it out of here!" soon looked forward to the weekend visits by "His Darling"!!!
As the school year drew to a close, I realized I would be reassigned to another class the following year. And despite our love affair with her, Britney would never be ours.
Enter Porky.
I am the first to admit that, back in those days, I was pretty pignorant. I hadn't even discovered the GPDD yet! So when it came time to say goodbye to Britney, off I went to Petco to buy our family a guinea pig of our own!
I must say that the salesgirl at Petco was VERY knowledgable and helpful. She told me all about nutrition, (especially Vitamin C), warned me about drafts, and refused to sell me an exercise ball, explaining how it could hurt the piggy as they weren't built for them Then she introduce me to Porky.
Porky, simply put was, (and is ) the cutest pig ever to walk the planet! Big bright eyes, a gorgeous mass of hair, and the sweetest dispostion this side of Heaven! It was love at first cuddle, and we never looked back.
My family fell in love with our newest member right away! Even our dog, Gaylord found Porky cute and amusing. Lyle, our cat, lost interest after the first sniff.
Porky has been with us four years now. She is the same sweetie we first brought home. She is a cuddle pig who rarely runs when you try to pick her up. I like to think it's just because she's friendly, but the truth of the matter is, well, Porky just doesn't see the point in moving much! (She has been known to pop for romaine, though!) Porky will get on your lap and sprawl right out...legs behind and head down. And she loves when we scratch her under her chin! We call this seeing her "beautiful lip". As you can see in the pigture, Porky gets her chin up high to have it rubbed!
Since we first met Britney, we've learned alot about guinea pigs, and have been lucky enough to own three others, as well as had a batch of babies!
We love each and every one of our pigs, and I love seeing everybody else's pigs on their sites and hearing all about them. But I know for certain, there will never, ever be another guinea pig in our lives quite like our Porky Porcellous! Sadly Porky died at the beginning of July, 2007 she was six. She will be greatly missed. We love you Porky.

The Story Behind the Art
23-Apr-05
I've been doing artwork for as long as I can remember, and even made my living as an artist for the better part of a decade. But circumstances (and finances) changed, and I began working for my city's public school system five years ago. Luckily for me, the school's schedule affords me lots of time to pursure my love of art!
Over the years, my family and friends have been given lots of my art as gifts. My own walls are covered with my work. The kids at my school always ask for - and usually get - pencil renderings of their favorite animals, sports figures, and beaus!I work in marker, charcoal, and pencil, and specialize in portraits of pets, people, and places.
Last year, after adopting our dog Pepper at Cape Ann Animal Aid, I came up with the idea of Art for Animals, which would combine my love of art with the shelter's need for donations. I designed and sold a line of greeting cards at various CAAA events. But even more popular has been the "commission" side of my project. People give me photos of the subject they'd like me to recreate ~ in the medium of their choice. They, in turn, make a donation to CAAA. Everybody wins! People get artwork they wouldn't ordinarily purchase, CAAA gets donations, and I get to create.
The first photo shows my daughter Julie at our booth at last year"s CAAA Doggy Days Event. The second is a view of some of the visitors at that event. Despite my busy schedule as a mom of a ten and a twelve year old, my "day job" as a Special Education Instructional Aide, and my heart's work for CAAA, I still find time - as some on the GPDDknow - to create guinea pig portraits for friends of my girls, the Haypile Honeys(aka Porky, Petunia, and Corkster). Oh, and don't be surprised if one of YOUR piggys ends up in a pig -toon someday!
